I don’t know what drug for sure. He lives with me know and has talked about wanting to change and have a better life. How can I help him without enabling. I will not put him down just keep encouraging him and letting him know how much his worth is. He has to make that choice to want help. I am just really worried.
How can I help him without enabling?
I’m so happy to hear that he has talked to you about wanting to change and have a better life, this shows you have provided him with a space to feel safe and comfortable sharing with you. It’s best to encourage getting help in those moments where our loved ones are motivated, as motivation to change can shift at any time. True, he has to make the choice to want help but from what I hear, he’s already made a statement about wanting help, and now you can help him act on it!
Getting someone into treatment or getting them help isn’t enabling, because in the end you’re encouraging healthy behavior change while not condoning the behaviors you don’t want to see your loved one engage in! In early recovery it takes time for the substance user to learn new behaviors, so helping them work getting started regarding making changes and having a better life isn’t enabling, it’s helping in a positive way!
It’s been a few months since you posted @Cheryl_Paterson. How are things going now? How are you feeling?
