Relapse. Scary as it sounds, it is part of the process. Think of any habit we try to change, it doesn’t happen over night, nor does it tend to happen perfectly without slip. Still, when substance use is involved it can be worrying and stressful. Knowing it’s part of the recovery process, how do you pick yourself up when you face a disappointment with your loved one?

At this stage, 2.5 years into the recovery journey with my husband, I realize that any one disappointment or frustration will pass. It tends to feel a lot more heavy at the time but now I’ve seen the ups and downs and know that we’re trending upward. I try to remind myself of this. And am getting better at giving myself a break, acknowledging the stress it puts on me.
