My husband told me he wants to take a break from drinking. Last night he came home with some beers after catching up with a friend. When I asked him about it (trying to keep judgement out of my tone :)) he said yeah, that’s his intention but he met up with this friend and…

I’m happy that he’s acknowledged that the drinking to calm his anxiety and put himself to sleep is not serving him any more and that he’s set an intention to change it. I know it won’t happen over night. But I think we are in a good spot. Progress.

My son who lives in Israel is coming home (to NYC) for his yearly visit. I’m happy I’ll be seeing him and he’ll be home for his 37th birthday.

Every time he comes home I worry about making the house perfect for him, stocking up on Kosher food, and being a good mom to make up for not knowing how to handle his addiction when he was younger. However, this visit I feel a bit calmer because last year we spent a lot of quality time together, and had a lot of deep meaningful conversations. This is also the first time he’s come home and not mentioned moving in with me and my husband (which we don’t want)! The win is he recognizes if he wants to move back home for good, he’ll need to pay his own way!

I set a boundary with my son regarding money I give him which feels like a win for me, and ultimately for him! He needs to learn to not depend on me (has a hard time keeping a job) and I need to work on sticking to my boundaries. So far so good! One day at a time!

In preparation to be with a loved one who is in recovery next week, I made a plan this week to engage in a lot of self-care so I’m emotionally prepared to cope with whatever comes my way. I made sure to exercise and keep in touch with my therapist. Putting myself first is generally difficult, so it’s a big win for me that I’m making sure that I’m okay!

Initially I was worried that all this self-care wouldn’t change how I interact in the moment, but I trust in the process and am focusing on the positive outcomes versus potential negative outcomes.

There’s an agreement in my house that my alcoholic sister won’t come home if she has been drinking nor will she bring any alcohol into the house. Two nights ago my sister coming home intoxicated and my dad said he now knows what needs to be done. He won’t tell us what that is but wants us to trust him. It’s really hard to trust someone who enables her behavior. I’m feeling very worried about what he has planned and how she will react.

On a good note, I had my last day of work yesterday and am getting ready to go back to school. I’m excited to see what happens this upcoming school year!!
