I grew up with an over bearing/smothering high functioning alcoholic father with an submissive/enabling mother. I’ve been a perfectionist my entire life and still retain All or Nothing thinking because of it. This past year of college this baggage has prevented me from admitting my faults without crushing myself into submission. Last year I did not live up to expectations that I promised to a friend of mine while he was away on for a semester. Rather that admitting that I messed up and that I was not able to resolve the issue for him alone/by myself, I ignored the issue and pretended it didn’t exist. This was the garden of guilt that I have built for my self and in which guilt has taken root and has been eating me alive ever since. I’ve been carrying this guilt with me for about 8 months now. Now everyone is returning to campus for our senior year and I confessed all this to another closer friend who also returned. I feel so relieved after this and I have surrendered myself to my situation and will accept all consequences. I will talk to the friend that I let down and be totally honest with him. How he feels about me is how he feels and thats okay. It might hurt, but I can only grow. I don’t need this guilt. I need my freedom and agency.

A scare turned into continued openness from my husband and motivation to consider growth opportunities - it is on me to keep open and listen and be patient about progress x

Good for you! You can’t live with guilt eating you up. My daughter often sums up the key to living a good life as acceptance. You are accepting your part in the situation and letting go of how he might feel about it. I applaud this decision.
