When love on it's own isn't enough - what are the options for getting someone 'committed' to rehab, and does it work?

“Can I have my 30 year old son committed to a drug rehab? We live in Indiana. Do I have to have him arrested to do it? Thank you for your reply in advance.”

Note: we at Village promote use of evidence-based best practices where possible - what this means a lot of the time is that we promote using communication and relational skills to work with our loved ones to (almost) coach them towards recovery (at minimum to reduce the harm of substances they’re using.)

However, when our health system leaves these struggling individuals in the clutches of addiction under our watchful eye and their lives are in danger - it’s only natural we look for options to take a stronger action to help. Interested here, in what has worked for others in this situation.

I feel like the person has to be willing to accept they have a problem and want help.

It might sound hard, but when my friend was starting to play with the idea to come clean he once told me that if he was to get caught using (meth) and going to work high, because he had an addiction, that work will have to send him to rehab, the way he told me that was like if he was wishing to get caught in order to help him get the strength he needed. He was clean for 17 years and started using again and the first time he quitted was because he was sent to rehab by court order. Some people need that extra push…
He ended up quitting by himself with the support of friends.
