How do you keep a calm and loving approach when you’re frustrated with your loved one’s substance use?

Lately my loved one’s substance use has been really bothering me. I know that it doesn’t help him for me to get angry and show disappointment but it’s hard not to show it.

I also feel like I’m pulling away which will leave him feeling more isolated and less loved and ultimately is not helpful.

Any tips to keep a cool head and avoid conflict and keep showing love even when it’s so hard to do so?

Pause if have to go to the other room and remember it’s a disease and try to get calm before talking

I would try to take time out for yourself. Your loved one is suffering an illness but your health is important too. Try a hobby, see friends and try a support group such as Al Anon/ or equivalent for other substances. It’s easier said than done I know but I always find taking some time out helped to keep me sane.
