I have 3 sons who struggle with addiction. I fear that one day I will lose one to drugs. How do you save them from themselves? I wanted them to have a better life, one without drugs.
How do you save a loved one struggling with addiction from themselves?
We are so, so glad you’re here, @Karen_Bruno-Pepson. I can only imagine your fear.
I think your question is layered. There is no one easy answer. (Unfortunate, isn’t it?!) It takes some experimenting to figure out what works for us individually & for our loved ones. (And trust you me, this can be frustrating… and also liberating that we don’t need to prescribe to one methodology, but that we have choice in how we engage our loved ones.)
First things first, taking care of ourselves so we can then love our people out of the overflow - and, bonus: we can model healthy living!
May I suggest this book as a resource? Get Your Loved One Sober - co-authored by Dr. Robert Meyers who developed the CRAFT model (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) that helps those of us who are concerned about someone struggling with Substance Use Disorder improve the quality of our own lives and learn how to make treatment an attractive option our loved ones.
If you’re comfortable, maybe you can share some more details about your sons? What drug(s) specifically? Do they live near or far? Etc.? We may have others in this Community who can relate more closely…
Thinking of you.
We’re glad your here @Karen_Bruno-Pepson <3 you’re among friends who get where you’re coming from.
We’re a community that is passionate about taking small steps to make big changes and we’ve learned strategies that we the friends and family can learn and do ourselves to help our loved one’s even before they’re ready to get help themselves!
3 is a lot to handle. And I know the feeling of watching someone you love hurt themselves. That’s pain.
We’re sending love and support. And to build on @katie’s great suggestion asking for a little more info on the situation… I’m also wondering if there’s one thing in particular that’s causing you the most concern today? Or perhaps instead one area you’re seeing some positive movement? Maybe if we dig into one of those we can find one thing to start to help you with
